AI (Artificial Intelligence) is the next big thing in the tech market. Interacting with your phone via voice is going to be common in the coming years. This all started with the Apple introducing Siri to the iPhone back in 2011. Google knows this, and thus they launched Google Assistant last year with their own flagship device Google Pixel. Initially, it was only limited to the Google Pixel devices. Then LG became the first non Google device to support Google Assistant to their new phone LG G6. Now it is clear that the Google Assistant will be available to all the Android users running Android 6.0 Marshmallow or the 7.0 Nougat.
Initially, it will be only available for English speaking community in the United States. Then it will be available for English speaking people in Australia, United Kingdom, and Canada. Google didn’t mention anything about the launch of non English speaking countries. But we can expect it to be launched in the near future.
While announcing this news, Gummi Hafsteinsson, Product Lead, Google Assistant in a blog post mentioned that “Our goal is to make the Assistant available anywhere you need it. It came to Android Wear 2.0—via new smartwatches—just a few weeks ago and, as we previewed in January, the Assistant is also coming to TVs and cars. With this update, hundreds of millions of Android users will now be able to try out the Google Assistant.”
It is clear that Google is taking this serious. There are several reasons for Google to allow Assistant to other devices. One of the biggest reason is the Amazon’s, Alexa. Amazon also has a personal assistant who is known as Alexa. Most of the Android devices are now leaning towards the Alexa. For example, Moto recently announced about the compatibility of Amazon’s Alexa to their Moto Z devices via the Moto Mod. Similarly, Chinese smartphone giant Huawei also announced that it would add Amazon’s, Alexa assistant to their upcoming devices. This all threatened and forced Google to make their Google Assistant available for every Android device.
Currently one can try Google Assistant on Google Pixel, Google Home and Android Wear 2.0 which recently got a new makeover with Google Assistant built in.
The largest mobile tech show is going on in Barcelone. If you happen to be there for the show, then don’t forget to pay a visit to the Google Village. Where they are showcasing their new Google Assistant which you can try for yourself.
It will be interesting to see how the rival assistant services like the Amazon’s Alexa, Apple’s Siri and Windows Cortana react to this move by Google.
